Beware, adopt a dog from “A Better Life Dog Rescue” and you may receive an unexpected visit from the police. That’s what happened to my wife and I on Friday morning December 02, 2011.

We have had dogs as part of our family all our lives. After a year without a dog, we decided to get another one and chose to rescue an unwanted dog. We did a search on the Internet found “A Better Life Dog Rescue” and the dog we hoped to adopt. A Cavalier King Charles X named Grady.

The history of Grady as on “A Better Life Dog Rescue” website and also told in more detail to us in person by a member of the “A Better Life Dog Rescue” society during our qualification home inspection was pathetic. The story goes that Grady belonged to a little old lady with Alzheimer’s who was a hoarder and that she passed away. Apparently, he wasn’t able to socialize with other people or dogs and spent much time in a closet.

We paid the $300.00 purchase price or adoption fee and welcomed Grady into our home in February 2011. Ten months go by and Grady made many friends here in in Halcyon.

In November we see in a news broadcast that Janet Olsen, the director of “A Better Life Dog Rescue”, and another member of the society had been charged with stealing a dog. They dressed up in official looking uniforms and tried to take a dog out of the owner’s yard. The police had them under surveillance and caught them in the act.

The very next day the police came to our door and after a long talk we gave up our Grady. To our misfortune he was involved in the ongoing dog theft investigate. It was hard to let him go but it was the loving and responsible thing to do. Grady was returned to his rightful owner during a police CTV News broadcast that evening.

We now know the history we were given about Grady was a total lie. His real name is Piper, he is a purebred, his owner is a young woman from Vancouver and he went missing in January 2011. We have since spoken to Piper’s owner and she didn’t stop looking for him – Piper is the love of her life.

I wonder how many other families have been affected by the vigilante acts from the leaders of “A Better Life Dog Rescue”. I hope they are found guilty and get the maximum penalty. Unfortunately, pets are just considered as property so the penalty would probably be no different from stealing a DVD player.

According to Consumeraffairs.com, the grandparents scam usually works like this:

You receive a phone call from someone who greets you with,

they say … “Hi Grandma or Grandpa.”
you say … “Hi.”
they say …”Do you know who this is?”
you say … one of your grand child names
they say …”Yeah!”

Without knowing it, you just made a mistake and supplied the name of a grandchild. The scammer then proceeds to impersonate that grandchild. Instead you should say, “No, I don’t know who this is,” If they then say “It’s your granddaughter or grandson” … you should say … “Really? Which one?” … Most likely, the next sound you hear will be a click, followed by a dial tone.

Residents list there homes for a variety of reasons. Some homes have been listed under value due to circumstances that required a quick sale. This has happened many times. A realtor and other residents wouldn’t necessarily know of the circumstances affecting the list price. There was even one occasion where a house was listed at $220,000 and sold for $219,000 which was at least $25,000 under the unit’s real value.

So when choosing a listing price for your home based on Halcyon comparable listings are you getting a true comparable or are there some special circumstance sales include in the equation which will suggest a lower than realistic listing price.

Unless the realtor is totally familiar with all listings and sales in Halcyon, the realtor would just say this is what you should list your home for based on the so called comparables and you could be leaving money on the table.
